An alleged electoral fraud in favor of the country's president, Evo Morales
Bolivia.- At least 87 people were arrested in Bolivia during protests this week for alleged electoral fraud in favor of the country's president, Evo Morales, the State Attorney General's office reported Friday.
The attorney general, Juan Lanchipa Ponce, cited in a statement from the prosecutor's office, explained that of the "more than 87 people apprehended", six are currently under preventive detention and twelve with substitute measures.
"We want to make it clear that we will not allow any of these events to remain in impunity," said the prosecutor about the riots that have been repeated since last Monday, during which several regional offices of the electoral body were attacked
Lanchipa added that the Public Ministry "works exhaustively to identify the material perpetrators and bring them before the jurisdictional authority to receive the corresponding sanction."
"Work is being done to find the perpetrators through police reports, witness statements, security cameras, among others," he said.
The prosecution opened forty cases for vandalism "that put the lives and integrity of the people at risk, also undermined public and private property," Lanchipa said.
The investigations began by complaints from representatives of public institutions and owners of affected goods, as well as other ex officio ones, he said.
The Public Ministry investigates the material and "intellectual" authors of these events, for the alleged commission of crimes of aggravated robbery, search, qualified damage and impeding the electoral process, among others, according to the prosecution.
The Ombudsman's Office had previously reported that the detainees were at least 57 and 29 injured.
The protests, in some violent cases, have happened since last Monday due to an alleged electoral fraud in favor of the president of the country after Sunday's elections.
The opposition and civic movements demand a second round between Morales and the opponent Carlos Mesa, to clear up doubts about the electoral process, with the support of international organizations and several countries.
