New York.- Mexico is one of the countries around the world with the greatest problem of impunity in the face of the murders of journalists, according to an index published on Tuesday by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
According to the New York-based organization, Mexico has 30 unsolved journalist deaths, a number that only exceeds the Philippines, with 41 cases.
Behind them, with 25 unexplained murders, is Somalia, which leads the CPJ's year-rounded impunity ranking, an indicator that calculates the number of cases to be solved as a percentage of each country's population.
Thus, with its more than 126 million inhabitants, those 30 cases place Mexico in seventh place in that classification.
Ahead, in addition to Somalia, only Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, the Philippines and Afghanistan, all countries with ongoing armed conflicts appear.
After Mexico, the list of the 13 worst states in terms of impunity in the face of the killings of journalists is completed by Pakistan, Brazil, Bangladesh, Russia, Nigeria and India.
In its recount, the CPJ examines the killings of journalists between September 2009 and August 2019.
"The impunity we have seen in these countries year after year and the knowledge that the authorities take little action against those who attack the press, impairs the ability of journalists around the world to do their jobs," the director said in a statement CPJ's defense attorney Courtney Radsch.
"Democratic governments cannot be silent to impunity if they want to be seen to support press freedom. It is critical that journalists and their families receive the justice they deserve and that world leaders demand accountability," he insisted.
In the last ten years, 318 journalists have been killed around the world for their work and in 86% of cases those responsible have not been successfully prosecuted, according to the CPJ.
