New torrential rains leave nine dead in Japan 2019

The fallen rain exceeded 280 millimeters in a twelve hour period Tokyo.- Torrential rainfall in recent days in Japan has left at least nine dead in Chiba (east of Tokyo) and other areas of the center of the country, areas that were still recovering from the ravages left by the strong typhoon Hagibis two years ago weeks The Japanese authorities continue this Saturday with search and rescue operations in the prefectures of Chiba and Fukushima, where there have been serious floods and landslides due to heavy rains during the last week.

In Chiba, 15 rivers were overwhelmed and flooded infrastructure such as roads, railways and several hundred houses, which forced the authorities to evacuate some 1,800 people, according to state-run NHK.

The rains also caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights this Friday at Narita International Airport (Tokyo), which together with suspension of railway connections and by bus led some 3,000 people to spend the night there, according to local agency Kyodo.

In some locations in Chiba, the rain on Friday exceeded 280 millimeters over a period of twelve hours, more than the average monthly maximum in the area, according to data from the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

Two weeks ago, one of the most powerful typhoons of the last decades to pass through Japan left about 80 dead and severe material damage mostly in the western, central and northeastern areas of the Japanese archipelago.
