ISRAEL.- A Mediterranean hurricane, also known as 'medicane', is heading towards the territory of Egypt and Israel, and this weekend can cause strong winds and rains, generating floods and destruction. According to AccuWeather, 'medicanes' occur rarely in the eastern regions and are more typical for the central and western Mediterranean.
"Its main impacts, such as wind, and rain ... will be anywhere in northeastern Egypt to Israel and perhaps southern Lebanon on Saturday," said meteorologist Dave Houk.
As for Egypt, the forecasts indicate that the greatest impact would be suffered by the Sinai Peninsula. At the same time, The Times of Israel explained that the heaviest rains and, as a result, floods, would be recorded in the lowlands in central and southern Israel. The newspaper explained that the winds of this 'medicane' can reach 110 km / h.
On the eve of the arrival of the cyclone, the authorities in the Gaza Strip have declared a state of emergency, which will remain in force until the afternoon of this Saturday. In addition, emergency centers were opened in several regions in the south of the country.
Medicane ', contraction of' Mediterranean hurricane ', the English name of this meteorological phenomenon, refers to cyclones with tropical characteristics that occur over the Mediterranean Sea. These are small maritime depressions, of great intensity and accompanied by strong winds.
